Drainage Help That Knows Mortimer Inside Out

When your drains stop working, you want someone who can get to you quickly and fix it properly. 24hrs Drainage is based on Falmouth Road in Reading, around 15 minutes from Mortimer Common. We cover The Street, Victoria Road, West End Road and everywhere in between.

Mortimer sits on higher ground than its neighbours, perched on top of Mortimer Hill with the Foudry Brook and Lockram Brook running through the lower parts of the parish. The soil here is gravel over clay — and that mix causes real problems for drainage. Surface water struggles to soak away after heavy rain, and the brook valleys are prone to flooding. The Neighbourhood Plan even flags surface water flooding as a known issue, especially around the eastern end of The Street near the station.

What Makes Mortimer Drains Different

Gravel Over Clay — A Bad Combination

Mortimer’s soil is gravel on the surface with clay underneath. The gravel lets water through quickly, but the clay below holds it. That creates waterlogged ground, extra pressure on your pipes, and a higher risk of joints separating or pipes shifting. It’s one of the main reasons blockages and pipe damage are common here.

The eastern end of The Street, close to Mortimer Station, is known for surface water flooding when drains can’t keep up with heavy rainfall. This is flagged in the village’s own Neighbourhood Plan. If you live in this area, keeping your drains clear and in good condition is especially important.

Two watercourses — the Foudry Brook and the Lockram Brook — flow through the parish. Properties near these brooks can see their drainage systems overwhelmed when water levels rise. The Foudry Brook is part of the wider Kennet catchment and falls under Environment Agency flood alert zones.

Mortimer is surrounded by woodland — Starvale Woods, Holden Firs, Wokefield Common — and many properties have large, established trees in their gardens. Tree roots are drawn to the moisture in drain pipes and will force their way through any crack or joint. If your drains keep blocking in the same spot, roots are a likely cause.

Some homes on the edges of Mortimer, towards Padworth Common and Mortimer West End, rely on septic tanks or older cesspits instead of mains sewerage. These systems need regular emptying and maintenance. If yours hasn’t been checked in a while, it’s worth booking an inspection before a problem starts.

Mortimer has everything from Victorian cottages along The Street to 1980s estates and modern new-builds. Each age of property comes with different pipe materials and layouts. Older homes often have clay or pitch-fibre pipes that are well past their lifespan, while newer builds can have poorly installed drainage that fails early. We’ve seen it all and we know what to look for.

Had a few problems with a national company's mis-diagnosis of a drainage problem. Called 24hr drains and had a call straight back with a quote. Great, knowledgeable guy, very personable, prompt and tidy. Wouldn't hesitate to use again and would recommend to anyone. All the 5 star reviews are definitely justified. Top man.

Excellent service quality and the best price! The person was very friendly, my drain got unclog, and I even had a guarantee (for a month or two, can't remember) that if the problem came back, they would come for free. That's the kind of worker that you're happy to pay - highly recommended
