Mortimer’s soil is gravel on the surface with clay underneath. The gravel lets water through quickly, but the clay below holds it. That creates waterlogged ground, extra pressure on your pipes, and a higher risk of joints separating or pipes shifting. It’s one of the main reasons blockages and pipe damage are common here.

Some homes on the edges of Mortimer, towards Padworth Common and Mortimer West End, rely on septic tanks or older cesspits instead of mains sewerage.
