Local drainage support

24hrs Drainage covers Goring-on-Thames and the surrounding villages for blocked drains, camera surveys, pipe repairs and off-mains systems. Engineers work around the clock for homes and businesses, and the base near Reading sits about eight miles from the village. Every job is quoted at a fixed price before any work begins.

What to do first

What should you do in the first five minutes?

Stop using water. Every flush, every tap and every wash cycle pushes more into a system with nowhere to put it, and it comes back up at the lowest point indoors.

  1. Turn off taps, stop flushing, and pause the washing machine and dishwasher

  2. Keep people and pets away from anything that has come back up

  3. Leave foul water where it is rather than clearing it yourself

Then phone. Someone will talk you through it while an engineer is already on the road.

Local drainage problems

Why do drains in Goring block so often?

Goring sits in a gap cut through chalk, and that chalk shapes almost every drainage problem in the village. Hard water, a shifting water table, and a lot of Victorian pipework all pull in the same direction. Knowing which of the three is behind your blockage is what stops you paying twice.

Get in touch

What does hard water do to a pipe?

Chalk ground gives Goring very hard water, and the minerals in it settle on the inside of the pipe. Scale builds worst on flat-graded runs, and it narrows the bore long before anything stops moving. Plenty of people blame fat for a blockage that is really a pipe running at half its width. Jetting shifts the debris, but only descaling strips the limescale back out and returns the pipe to full bore.

Why does the drain only back up when it rains?

That pattern is rarely a blockage at all. Rain lifts the water table in the chalk, and groundwater finds its way in through cracked pipes and open joints. Thames levels do the rest: when the river is high, the outfall struggles and the system has nowhere to send the water, so it comes back up at the lowest point on the property. Jetting a drain like that clears nothing, because there was never anything in the way. A camera goes down first, always.

What goes wrong in the older houses?

The village has 27 buildings on the National Heritage List for England and more than 80 others of historic merit, and it went through a building boom in the late 1800s. A lot of Goring homes therefore still run on original clay pipe laid in short lengths with mortar joints. Roots do not push through the wall of a clay pipe. They come in at the joint, where the mortar has given way. Cut them out and leave the joint open, and they are back inside a year, which is why the sensible fix is to reline the pipe from the inside once the roots are gone. Lining also keeps a drive or a listed frontage intact.

Do the newer homes escape it?

Not entirely. Goring's neighbourhood plan, adopted in July 2019, allocates sites for up to 110 new homes, and newer properties bring their own pattern: shared runs, soakaways and building debris left in the system. Blockages in the first few years are usually one of those three, and a survey tells you which.

Off-mains drainage

What are the rules for a septic tank around Goring?

Plenty of properties above the village and out towards the Chiltern hamlets are not on mains drainage. The rules for these systems are strict, so it pays to check the discharge before spending money.

Off-mains drainage work can involve the tank, discharge point and the ground around it.
Where can a septic tank discharge?

A septic tank in England must not discharge effluent directly to a watercourse. Under the Environment Agency's general binding rules for septic tanks, wastewater from a septic tank must discharge to ground through a compliant drainage field. A small sewage treatment plant can discharge treated effluent to surface water where the applicable rules are met.

For new systems, the current standards are BS EN 12566 for septic tanks and small sewage treatment plants, and BS 6297:2007 for drainage fields. This often comes to light during a property sale because the seller must give the new operator written details of the system, drainage arrangement and discharge point. If the system does not meet the rules, it may need to be changed or permitted.

What changes around Gatehampton?

Gatehampton has seven major boreholes drilled into the Chalk. They form a major public water abstraction site on the southern edge of Goring, which makes groundwater protection especially relevant locally.

A discharge to ground in Groundwater Source Protection Zone 1 cannot rely on the standard general binding rules. An Environment Agency permit is required instead, so the exact location of the proposed discharge needs checking before a new system is planned.

Why test the ground before buying?

On an off-mains job, check the ground before you buy the tank. The drainage field can decide whether the scheme is practical at all, and ground conditions can change over a short distance around the chalk landscape.

A percolation test helps show whether the ground can accept the discharge and how large the drainage field needs to be. Buying equipment first can leave you with a system that does not suit the site.

Get the survey done first. If the system does need replacing, we can install a new septic tank or treatment plant once the ground and discharge route have been checked.

Whose drain is it anyway?

Is the blocked drain actually yours to pay for?

Sometimes it is not, and you should know that before anyone charges you.

Since the private sewer transfer in 2011, drains shared with neighbouring properties and lateral drains beyond your boundary are normally the water company's responsibility. In Goring, that means Thames Water. Clearing a blockage on its side of the line is its job, while pipework inside your boundary that serves only your property remains your responsibility. A camera survey can quickly show where the fault sits, and if it is on Thames Water's pipework, you can be pointed to the right team.

How it works

How does a Goring call-out actually work?

Goring call-out Step 01 / 03
  1. Start here

    Call or book online

Describe the problem, give the postcode, and you will get an idea of cost on the call itself. Booking takes about two minutes.

  2. Diagnose first

    We look, then we price

An engineer finds the fault, explains it in plain words, and gives one fixed figure. Nothing starts until you say yes to it.

  3. Finish the job

    Sorted and cleaned up

The work gets done, the area gets left tidy, and payment happens afterwards. If something bigger turns up mid-job, everything stops and you get told before another penny is spent.

Straight pricing

What does drain work cost in Goring?

Nobody on the first page of Google will tell you, so here is a straight answer. Checkatrade's 2026 cost guide gives around £80 to £100 as a rough guide for drain cleaning services, with rodding averaging around £85 and jetting nearer £185. Goring jobs can fall around these guide figures, but out-of-hours calls and anything involving a survey or repair sit higher. Camera surveys and no-dig repairs are priced on the job.

Once an engineer has looked, you get one figure agreed before the work starts. The figure you agree is the figure you pay, and nothing gets added at the end. Every quote is worked out for the specific job, so prices do vary.

Why choose us

What makes this different from the next quote?

The difference is not another badge or promise. It is knowing who is coming, what the job will cost, and what happens if the problem turns out to be bigger than expected.

Direct contact

You speak to the person doing the work.

Carlo and the team explain the fault, the fix and the cost themselves. No call centre sits between you and the engineer, and nobody gets pushed into work they do not need.

Fixed pricing

The price cannot move underneath you.

One figure, agreed before any tool comes out of the van. If a bigger problem appears, everything stops and you decide what happens next.

Goring knowledge

Local knowledge, not a town name pasted in.

Chalk scale, groundwater in wet weather, and Victorian clay joints are the three faults behind most Goring call-outs. Arriving knowing that saves you a wasted visit.

24 hour cover

Genuinely round the clock, including off-mains.

Emergency cover runs 24 hours a day, every day, and that covers tanker work and septic systems too, not just the easy jobs.

Public proof

Reviews you can open and check.

The Google profile is public and the Checkatrade profile is verified. Anyone can read them without taking our word for anything.

Areas covered

Which villages does this cover?

Coverage runs across Goring itself and over the 1923 bridge into Streatley, plus South Stoke, Cleeve, Gatehampton, Woodcote, Goring Heath and Whitchurch Hill. The Goring Gap is the only place in the British Isles sitting inside two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty at once, with the Chilterns on the Oxfordshire bank and the North Wessex Downs on the Berkshire side, and both sides get the same service. Being based near Reading, roughly ten miles by road, means getting to the village is quick at any hour.

Goring drainage FAQs

Common questions about drainage in Goring

Straight answers on flooding, repeat blockages, drain repairs, septic tanks and commercial drainage in and around Goring-on-Thames.

Is Goring-on-Thames at risk of flooding?

Yes. The Environment Agency has a flood warning area for the River Thames from Cleeve Lock to Child Beale Park, above Pangbourne, including Goring and Streatley. At the downstream Goring Lock gauge, 5.46 metres is the highest level recorded, on 10 January 2014, and property flooding is possible above 5.21 metres. High river levels can also make existing drainage problems more noticeable during wet spells.

How fast can you get to Goring from Reading?

24hrs Drainage is based in Reading and takes emergency calls 24 hours a day, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. Urgent drainage calls are handled as emergency work rather than routine planned maintenance, so the team can respond as quickly as availability and road conditions allow.

Can a drain be repaired without digging up my driveway?

In many cases, yes. Drain lining fits a new liner inside the existing pipe, which can repair suitable damage without excavating the full run. A CCTV drain survey is used first to confirm the condition of the pipe and whether a no-dig repair is suitable. This can be useful where avoiding excavation and surface disruption matters.

My septic tank discharges into a ditch. Is that a problem?

Yes. In England, a septic tank must not discharge directly to a watercourse. If it does, the system needs to be changed, for example by connecting to a public foul sewer, replacing the tank with a small sewage treatment plant, or installing a compliant drainage field so the discharge goes to ground. If the property is being sold, the buyer and seller should agree who will be responsible for the upgrade.

Do you handle commercial drainage in the village?

Yes. 24hrs Drainage works with commercial sites including restaurants, pubs, retail units, offices, schools and care homes. The service includes planned drain maintenance, CCTV investigation and 24-hour emergency drainage support.

Why does my drain keep blocking even after it was cleared?

A repeat blockage often points to an underlying fault rather than a one-off obstruction. Root intrusion, scale, a cracked or collapsed pipe, a displaced joint or an incorrect fall can all cause the problem to return. A CCTV drain survey checks the inside of the pipe so the cause can be identified before more repair work is agreed.

Goring drainage help

A blocked drain in Goring is usually a symptom

Clearing it matters today. Finding out why it happened is what stops you making the same call next winter. Chalk, groundwater and old clay joints are behind most of it, and every one of them is fixable once somebody has actually looked. Call, book online, or send a WhatsApp message, and it gets sorted.

No obligation, and you will be told honestly if the drain is not yours to pay for.
